Description
In honoring and commemorating the lives of the Charleston Nine. Apanaki Temitayo M’s artwork ‘Madonna and Child: The Scared and Profane’ pays tribute to their legacy and strives to bring awareness around social issues in our community. On June 18, 2015, nine people were shot and killed at the Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston. The massacre was committed by Dylann Roof who had been reportedly motivated by “racist ideologies” and white supremacy. Though one of the victims survived, there has been a push for change around gun laws and racial biases in response to this situation as well as others across our country. The ‘Madonna and Child: The Scared and Profane’ serves as a symbol of peace between communities that have been plagued with violence.
