Love it.
A drought in Texas that started roughly 2009 turned into record heat and wildfires by 2011. . Much was lost during that time, including homes, lives, forests, and livlihoods. This painting is #2 in a series I did in memory of the loss of a favorite madrone tree in Big Bend National Park. Once a beautiful living madrone tree found at a pull-out on the drive up to the basin campgrounds, I have been photographing it since the mid 1960s. I was shocked and saddened to find it dead from the heat and drought in 2011. To me it represents all of the losses from global warming and climate change that we have endured.

The Dead Mad...
I have drawn and painted all my life, but for many years, my "day job" was as a special education/science teacher of high school age students. Now I paint full time, primarily in watermedia. My favorite medium is transparent watercolor. I love the way the paper glows through layers of paint, and the way the paint has a mind of its own. Only with watercolor can you not assume that the paint will be obedient and stay where and as you put it. It is very much a living medium, that(on good days) cooperates with the painter to create art. I feel blessed to live near the beautiful Guadalupe River, and all the varied sights of the Central Texas Area. I am a signature member of the Texas Watercolor Society, and an associate member of the...

A sad tribute to our beautiful and majestic trees, but a very beautiful work of art! I would take this as a personal loss myself, our trees are like the Queens of nature to me. We lost four big ones during hurricane Sandy.
Marsha Reeves replied:
Thank you Sharon. So sorry for the lost trees .

Marsha, thank you for sharing this in the BUZzz! You definitely have wet-on-wet techniques mastered as well as your use of frisket. I love this study if your Madrone tree series.
Marsha Reeves replied:
Thank you Laurel!
Conni Schaftenaar
Oh, Marsha, this is magnificent! So glad you shared it in the Techniques thread on The BUZzz - you must of used a LOT of masking fluid to protect those beautiful pinks and violets from the darker greens and blues coming up from below - simply marvelous! And, I WISH I had a photo to paint of an old, treasured tree from my childhood that went down to a bulldozer to build a stupid subdivision back in the early '60s - I cried and cried to watch that happen. It is amazing how much something like a single tree can mean in your life. Fave
Marsha Reeves replied:
Thank you Conni! Near the end of the process, most of the paper is covered with frisket.
Merana Cadorette
A beautiful artwork to note a sad part of the cycle of nature.

I shall visit the southwest through your paintings today. It is a tragedy, what is happening to nature in our world today. How sad to find "your" tree in this condition, but even so, you have found the beauty in your old friend. I particularly love the white lines you have carried throughout. like/f
Marsha Reeves replied:
Thank you Anne! The drought has passed now, but the area has had fires this summer. The desert is so fragile.
